Foundation Learning & Skills for Life

This course is for young adults with a range of severe learning disabilities and complex needs, including students with Profound and Multiple Disabilities (PMLD) and Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC).

The course will prepare students by focusing on these four areas:

  • Community Awareness
  • Independence
  • Work Skills
  • Health and Wellbeing.

    Students will also work on developing their communication skills, establishing daily routines and making choices which enable them to gain control over their lives and enhance their quality of life.

    Each learner has a study programme which is highly individualised and tailored around the diverse needs of the individual, using long-term goals which are based on the student’s EHCP Outcomes.
  • Entry requirements

    None.

  • Who is the course for?

    Students aged 16-24 with High Needs, offering specialised support for those with profound learning difficulties, sensory impairments, physical disabilities, and severe medical conditions. This ensures a tailored educational journey for each individual.

  • Study methods

    Learners will have a programme based on their own individual starting points and needs which is tracked and monitored in a variety of ways including RARPA and using individual targets that are negotiated and set with learners, carers and therapists.

  • How is the course assessed?

    A sensory and developmental curriculum with a personalised approach, the curriculum focuses on developing communication, engagement and experiences. Using the RARPA Framework, the focus will be on individualised learning, with each student working towards their own targets which are tracked and reviewed through each session.

    Students attend college four days per week.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    This course can be up to a four-year programme depending on personal development and individual needs.

    Some learners will progress to other courses or into positive adult services and community provision.
