Website Accessibility Statement for Harrow College

This accessibility statement applies to Harrow College’s website: www.harrow.ac.uk

This website is run by Harrow College, part of HRUC.  We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website and aim to meet a minimum of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance in line with the Web Accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1) standards.

For example:

  • We have ensured text is clear and concise to allow essential information to be easily digested
  • Images and videos are supplementary to other content and we have ensured that access to these is not required in order to use the website effectively.
  • We have endeavoured to ensure navigation around the site is intuitive, logical and requires the minimum of inputs and most of the website can be navigated using a keyboard
  • The layout and presentation of website pages have been designed to reduce clutter where possible and only present relevant information.
  • We have been working to reduce the necessity for the download of documents which are not optimised for on-screen viewing, including PDFs.

How accessible is this website?

We continue to work on ensuring our website is as accessible as possible, however there are some parts that we are still working on including:

  • Ensuring all animations can be paused
  • Adding an accessibility tool /guide to the website to help improve the user experience
  • Adding PDFs that meet accessibility guidelines.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Not all images have alternative text available. We are working on adding this into existing content by January 2024 and new images published on the website will have alternative text.
  • New PDFs published on the site will be tagged correctly with alternative text.
  • There are some minor contrast issues that will be reviewed by January 2024.
  • We will review the keyboard navigation on the subject area part of our dynamic course search.
  • Some images of text (e.g. logos) are used on web pages for illustrative purposes. Where possible we will reduce this and use alternative images.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Some PDFs and word documents are essential to providing our services, however some may not fully meet accessibility standards. We will review existing content and publish new content as html web pages where possible.
  • PDF content supplied by others did not fully meet accessibility criteria. We will look to add website links where possible to ensure we can link to relevant and helpful information for our website users.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We aim to audit our website every six months, via our third-party website agency, and resolve any conflicts that may arise from that.

Following our recent audit in October 2022 the following actions have been taken:

  • Colour contrast has been improved across the site to reduce poor colour contrast and enable users to see the difference between colours more easily.
  • Accessing content using a keyboard has been improved across the site.
  • A visible focus has been improved including adding more keyboard accessible elements, more defined visible borders around elements on page and clearer focus at 200% zoom.
  • A pause button has been added to sliders/carousels.
  • Animations will now include a pause button.
  • ARIA attributes have been fixed.
  • Text can be resized across the site to a minimum of 200%.
  • Images of text are being reduced and information being added to the site will avoid using images of text.
  • Where logos have been used as images the alt text has been updated to confirm they are a logo.
  • A PDF document from a third party provider flagged as having contrast issues, has been removed.
  • We will add alternative text to new PDF documents that are published on the site.

This statement was prepared on 20 January 2023. It was last reviewed on 10 November 2023.

This website was last tested on 20 January 2023. The test was carried out by Qlue and focused on the website issues that required fixing from the Government Digital Service’s Accessibility Report dated 18 October 2022.
