Like Gloria Ssali, student of the Ceramics workshop in Harrow College, was invited to submit her work to the 'Fifth Ceramic Tile World Triennial' in the Dominican Republic. The exhibition featured ceramic tiles from over one hundred countries. Gloria, originally from Uganda, created a tile with the title, The Rhino Year – 2013 – The Black Hole to Extinction. The judges noted a special mention of Gloria's work in the African region category. You can read more about this here.

Gloria won the Best Tile Cultural Heritage award from five categories in the Elit-Tile competition held in the Dominican Republic, last year. Gloria has left her profession as a pharmacist to be a full-time artist. Such is her love for ceramics. She describes this period as '...entering a new phase in her life'. "I feel like I've found my soul...I've learnt so much at Harrow College and I want to do something for the College and the community".

Paul Power, on the other hand is a mechanic. He chose the Woodworking for Beginners course at Harrow College, to try something new.

He likes developing his hand skills to try and produce challenging and high quality items. This is the second time he has enrolled to the course.

This course has enabled Paul to make a traditional carpenters tool box, a bed that can be assembled and taken apart in a few minutes with no screws or glue, a spiral table and a folding stool.

Paul's tutor Chris says, 'Paul has developed his hand skills to an extremely high standard and now has the competency and dexterity to tackle quite complex tasks'.

Afroza Ali, a drawing and painting student, shows us what a beginner can do with grit and determination. While many of her classmates have exhibited in group shows and received painting commissions, Afroza will be showcasing her work in a solo exhibition at the Harrow Arts Centre this November!

These are some of the inspiring stories of our adult learners and you could have one too. Explore our wide range of Adult courses here. Whether it's music, languages, cooking, computing or communication skills. There is a skill waiting to be learned by you.
