It is always a proud moment for us to share how well our apprentices are doing in the workplace and at college but this time we can go one better and share how well our apprentice Tyler Lewis has done in the @WorldSKillsUK final heats, as he won the top prize in his category and is now a gold medal winner!
Tyler, an IT Solutions apprentice through HRUC Apprenticeships & Skills works at Haydon School in their IT Team. Last year he was successful in the WorldSkills UK regional heats, winning himself an opportunity to go to the national finals where he was awarded gold!
This fantastic achievement has now secured him a place in the WorldSkills UK Team to represent the UK in Lyon, France next year. The WorldSkills UK competition is an Olympics for skills bringing the best in the country together to represent the UK in a number of skills categories, so it is really prestigious and an honour to win a place in the UK Team.
It is no surprise that as well as success in the WorldSkills competitions he was also awarded a Highly Commended prize in the Apprentice of the Year category at the West London Business Awards – a highly regarded awards ceremony for those in business within west London.
Apprenticeships are a great way to gain a qualification whilst working in a real job. Tyler embodies how an apprenticeship really does help people gain knowledge and skills that are directly applied in a real job within the workplace, as well as how businesses benefit from gaining the talent they need for their job roles.
We are so pleased for Tyler and everything he has achieved, which is testament to the support he gains from his manager and colleagues in his workplace, as well as the guidance from his apprenticeship teachers and assessor at HRUC Apprenticeships & Skills.
Jo Withers, Principal of Harrow College who oversees our Apprenticeships & Skills work across HRUC, was delighted to present Tyler with his medal in the West London Institute of Technology building, which is home to many of HRUC's higher apprenticeships and higher education STEM courses. She said:
"We never cease to be proud of our students' achievements, but the day we have the honour of presenting a national WorldSkills Gold medal to an IT Solutions apprentice is the day when the pride is bursting. We know Tyler will work really hard to win that prize in Lyon next year, where he will definitely be going for gold…again!"
