The course is divided into two separate parts. In your first year you will study to complete a diploma and in your second year you will achieve an extended diploma which is equivalent to 3 A levels. This course will develop your understanding of a range of careers in 3D design such as interior design, architecture, theatre design and product design. The course will prepare you for entrance to a relevant degree and we will help you develop a successful portfolio for your interview as well as helping you to manage your UCAS application process. Past students have gained entrance to a range of prestigious degree courses in many different areas of Architecture and Design. You will learn skills that Universities really value and skills that will enable you to compete for degree places successfully. You will learn to how to draw in perspective, use CAD programs to design your ideas, use Image processing packages to present your designs and Use CAD/CAM equipment as well as traditional model making and technical drawing techniques to produce final models. You will also study the history and contemporary practice of design. You'll explore a range of ideas within 3D and you'll learn through practical and critical activities to express and gain knowledge of the different areas within 3D, by creating sketchbooks full of research, ideas and development. We have a varied and lively work experience program with a range of architects and employers and we aim to provide as many opportunities for work experience as possible.

Entry requirements
4 x GCSEs at grades 9-4 (grade A-C) including Art or Design Technology or a relevant Level 2 qualification at merit grade. We will consider students without Gcse Art or Design and Technology but students should be able to show evidence of art skills.

Who is the course for?
The course is designed to prepare students for a career in architecture, product design, interior design or 3D design.

Study methods
The lecturers will demonstrate techniques and the safe use of tools and materials. Most of your lessons will be art-workshop based where you will be doing practical tasks and taking notes in your sketchbooks. You will also be taken on visits to museums or other places where you have an opportunity to do some observational drawings and take photographs for your projects.

How is the course assessed?
You will complete sketchbooks and final pieces for each project, writing comments about your work and a final evaluation. At the end of each year, you will complete a Final Major Project (FMP) where you have an opportunity to work more independently. This final unit will be assessed and you can achieve either a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. This will be the overall grade for that year of the course.

More information
You will need to have some art materials at home such as a range of HB-6B pencils, colouring pencils, water colour, acrylic paints and brushes, in order to complete your sketchbook work,
There may be some additional costs for travel and relevant museum/exhibition visits during this course.
Please bring the usual writing materials and drawing pencils, an eraser and a sharpener to all lessons.

Where Next – Further Studies
The majority of our students progress onto a degree in Architecture, Product Design, Interior Design or Theatre and Set design. You could also progress onto a foundation course.
