Art & Design

You will develop your skills in drawing, printing techniques, painting, ceramics, stop frame animation and digital art as well as exploring and analysing other artists’ work. You will also work to improve your English and Maths skills by studying Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications if you have yet to achieve Grade 4 in either subject.

  • Entry requirements

    You should have an interest in the subject area you are applying for. There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and maths to make sure you are working at Entry Level 3 or above. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

  • Who is the course for?

    The Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media are designed to provide students who are intrigued and motivated by art and design with opportunities to explore, develop and test their creativity. It aims to introduce you to the skills and techniques used in art and design, allowing you to develop your creative skillset within a structure that will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge.

  • Study methods

    Classes will be a mixture of design theory teaching together with practical workshops where you will be supported to build your knowledge and expertise in different artistic skills. Our courses include some live projects (with real clients), the chance to exhibit your work, preparing you for your first role in the industry.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The first six units allow you to build and develop your skills in a range of different artistic techniques All mandatory units must be passed to progress on the course. The final project gives you the opportunity to explore your own art style and interests - it is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction and will give you your overall grade for the course. All work is assessed through sketchbook that documents your coursework.

  • More information

    You will need to have some art materials at home, such as drawing and colouring pencils, fine line pens, paints and brushes to complete your sketchbook homework.

    There may be some additional costs for travel and relevant museum/exhibition visits during this course.

    Please bring the usual writing materials and drawing pencils, an eraser and a sharpener to all lessons.

  • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    This Course will help you progress in a career in the art and design industry by providing the basic knowledge you need. Most students will not go into employment until they have finished a Level 2 or Level 3 course.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    After this course you can progress at Harrow onto the one-year Level 2 Diploma in Art, and then a two-year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art. Many students will then study a range of creative arts courses at University on either a Foundation Art Diploma, or Degree course.
