This course is designed for art students interested in enhancing their practical "hands-on" skills and digital expertise while expanding their knowledge of various art and design disciplines. You will explore:

Illustration
Mixed Media
Painting
Ceramics
3D Design

Contextual Studies
Model Making
and portfolio development.

You will have access to the full Adobe Suite, an industry-standard tool that will help you strengthen your digital skills throughout the course.

The program includes educational visits to galleries and exhibitions, giving you the opportunity to experience the works you study in person. Projects will highlight the importance of research and the creative development of your coursework, encouraging you to explore various influences and cultural references to cultivate a more personal response to your work.

In the second year, there will be a focus on you as an emerging artist or designer, allowing you to develop your own ideas for projects. You will also have the chance to collaborate on live projects, exhibitions and community outreach initiatives with local organisations or charities.

By the end of the course, you will have developed an exceptional portfolio which supports the majority of our students in gaining entry to some of the best universities in the country including UAL, London Met and Goldsmiths.

Who is the course for?
Study methods

Most of your lessons will be art studio based where you will be doing practical tasks and completing evidence of your developing skills and knowledge in your sketchbooks. You will develop ideas for 2D, 3D and time-based live projects, learning through practical and critical activities to express yourself.

You will also study the history and contemporary practice of art and design with work experience opportunities, exciting exhibition visits, trips to museums and opportunities to explore other sources of inspiration.
How is the course assessed?

You will complete sketchbooks and final pieces for each project, writing comments about your work and a final evaluation. At the end of each year, you will complete a Final Major Project (FMP) where you have an opportunity to work more independently, following a theme using media and techniques that best represent your skills and interests. This final unit will be assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, and provide the overall grade for each year of the course.
More information

You will need to have some art materials at home such as a range of HB-6B pencils, colouring pencils, water colour, acrylic paints and brushes, in order to complete your sketchbook work.

There may be some additional costs for travel and relevant museum/exhibition visits during this course.

Please bring the usual writing materials and drawing pencils, an eraser and a sharpener to all lessons.

Successful students can progress to a Foundation Art Diploma, or Degree course at a wide range of Colleges and Universities. Past students have gained entrance to a range of prominent degree courses in many of the disciplines mentioned above. The College has strong links with the University of Arts London (UAL) Aim Higher initiative which provides students with access to free spring and/or summer courses during your first year.
