On Wednesday 21st September, Harrow College hosted our Annual Student Awards ceremony, at the KP Centre’s grand hall, in Kenton.

The student awards are an opportunity to highlight and recognise students and employers who have excelled in education and skills training, fought against the odds, given time as volunteers, and supported their peers in the past year. Since the return to a more normal academic year last year, with teaching and learning fully on site, this gave our students the chance to make the most of the amazing facilities on campus and learn from their experienced tutors face to face. The return to normalcy and stability has allowed individuals to flourish and thus the achievements of all the nominees listed below are truly exceptional.

Distinguished guest speaker, 24 year old Akshay Ruparelia, an entrepreneur proud of his Harrow roots, provided all those in attendance with an extraordinary and inspiring speech about how hard work and dedication enabled him to invest in himself. Akshay was born to two deaf parents, originally from East Africa, and alongside his elder sister, grew up as a young carer for them. He became the UK’s youngest self-made millionaire in 2017 as a result of a business he set up in his childhood bedroom.

The idea for his business occurred when he discovered just how high estate agent commission fees are. At the age of 17 he decided to set up an online estate agency offering a flat fee of £99; Doorsteps.co.uk. Whilst studying for his A Levels, Akshay would divide his spare time between working on his business, applying for university, and preparing for exams. Having received an offer to study at The University of Oxford, Akshay decided not to pursue higher education and instead put all his effort into transforming his business into the success that it is today. Everyone present was inspired by Akshay’s story; his speech was one of optimism, creativity, commitment, and self-belief.

Harrow College Principal, Jo Withers, and Vice Principal, Darrell DeSouza, also welcomed the Honourable Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Janet Mote, and Mayoress, Mrs Anne Moore, to the celebration as their esteemed guests.
