The Science department at Harrow College has collaborated with the nationally renowned Big Bang Fair to host a Big Bang event as part of their annual Expo celebration. The Big Bang Fair is a very successful annual 4 day national event aimed at inspiring 11-14 year olds interested in STEM (the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
The Big Bang Expo, held at the Harrow Weald Campus, included a number of STEM professionals who were on hand to network with Science students and offer some of their expertise and career advice. Apprentices from Harrow College joined in with a Careers Speed Networking event and had much to share about their experience of working and studying within the STEM sector. Representatives from Kingston University were also on hand to talk about university life and the STEM related careers some of their graduates have pursued.
One of the highlights of the day and a big hit with the students was the Ugly Animal Show delivered by TV presenter, Science Writer and Communicator, Simon Watts (previously presenter of the hit Channel 4 TV programme ‘Inside Nature’s Giants’). His show intrigued the on looking student audience who were fascinated by what they leant (…and if you want to know what the chocolate frog, banana frog and strawberry frog all have in common, ask any of our Science students!).
The action packed Expo offered many fantastic Science activities and experiments for all to enjoy which included physics rocket launches, chemical explosions (it was the Big Bang Expo after all!) , safely burning hands, model power stations, making fruit batteries, lip balm making and live dissections…and of course plenty of refreshments including drinks and cakes!
