In November 2015, some of Harrow College's AS and A2 Maths students took part in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematical Challenge. This is a nationwide competition which takes the form of an exam with interesting and unusual questions; no calculators are allowed!
Two of the students, Hao Chen and Viktoria Noel, were awarded silver certificates, while Farzia Hussaini and Adrian Kucharski were awarded bronze certificates (see photo).
The Senior Challenge is aimed at all 16-19 year olds studying mathematics. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes and is sat in school under normal exam conditions.
Below is one of the questions from the paper:
The Knave of Hearts tells only the truth on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. He tells only lies on all the other days. The Knave of Diamonds tells only the truth on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. He tells only lies on all the other days. On one day last week, they both said, “Yesterday I told lies.” On which day of the week was that? (
Well done to the certificate winners from Harrow College.
