A Harrow College student's work has been displayed and specially mentioned by a series of leading judges following an international tile exhibition and competition.
Gloria Angela Ssali, currently studying on the Ceramics Workshop at Harrow College, submitted her work to the 'Fifth Ceramic Tile World Triennial' which took place at the Museum of Modern Art in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. The exhibition featured ceramic tiles from over one hundred countries.
Gloria, an adult learner originally from Uganda, created a ceramic tile which has the title "The Rhino Year 2013 – Blackhole To Extinction'' (see picture). The impressed judges noted a special mention of Gloria's work in the African Region category.
Joanna Anderson who teaches Gloria at Harrow College said "Gloria is a very accomplished ceramic student making large coil built pots and tiles ranging from A2 to A3 in size. Her work illustrates traditional themes and cultural stories that are passed from generation to generation in Uganda. We are so happy she has been recognized again in this international event where she has previously achieved first place in her category".
Speaking of her international recognition, Gloria said "this piece was inspired initially by Prince William as he began his public royal duties in 2013 and in the same month the last rhino being killed in Mozambique. I enjoyed this work and got a lot of support from my tutor Joanna Anderson in creating it . The whole experience was so moving and hopefully brought a small amount of awareness to the plight of the rhino".
