HNC Business students from Harrow College have visited the prestigious London Business Show held at ExCeL London (16 May 2018).
The students took full advantage of the event taking every opportunity to attend talks and seminars led by leading entrepreneurs. Many of the topics were relevant to the business units studied by the students at Harrow College including Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and Managing a Successful Business Project.
The students were particularly impressed by the keynote speakers including Priya Chauhan, Google Digital Specialised Trainer, who gave a very informative and motivating talk entitled ‘Building a Digital Marketing Plan’. They also met Steven Smith – founder of the successful Poundland store. He had been ridiculed by family and friends when he initially shared his idea but remained focused and now runs a very successful business. A talk from Tommy Fordman (star of the TV show TOWIE) entitled ‘From Nothing to Something’ was also very inspirational. Tommy outlined his humble beginnings and the challenges he faced in setting up his business. Sheer determination and hard work enabled him to rise above the challenges of poverty and competition – Tommy now owns and runs his own successful shoe brand enterprise named Mallet Footwear.
Reflecting on the event, the Harrow College students agreed that the show had raised their awareness of the many opportunities and support services which exist for budding entrepreneurs. A key theme of the day was based around hard work and being passionate about your ideas and aspirations – something the students will take back to Harrow College when completing their HNC course.
Speaking after the event, Lorraine Adepoju, Business Lecturer at Harrow College said:
“I was very impressed by the high level of professionalism evident at the Business Show this year and pleased that the students engaged so well with the talks and activities and were not afraid to approach the speakers to ask questions to enhance their learning and understanding. I am very confident that this exposure to such a high profile business environment will be greatly beneficial and reflected in the quality of written assignments submitted by our students this year”.
