Community engagement and well-being were the themes for the Health and Care department’s Expo 2018. Students from Health and Social Care and Childcare courses organised a range of activities and displays to entertain the many visitors on the day.

Level 1 Health and Social Care students chose to raise money for Children in Need. They had a ‘Guess the sweets in a jar’ game, henna, popcorn, cakes and sweets stalls and also set up a rubber duck race in a paddling pool. They successfully raised £75.31.

Level 2 and Level 3 Health and Social Care students set up an Expo coffee morning in the buildings specialist care suite where they invited visitors to role play different everyday care related scenarios. The students played the role of carer and provided sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee whilst engaging in conversation and providing a positive and friendly experience for their guests. The students then organised a karaoke room and another room with puzzles, games and meditation. In each area they encouraged visitors to have a go which provided a lot of fun!

Level 2 & Level 3 Childcare & Teaching Assistant students created a range of activities and displays specifically for children and parents. Visitors enjoyed games, activities and displays which provided information on festivals, road safety, e-safety, the seasons, deaf awareness and mindfulness amongst other things.

Visitors, including local residents, community partners, family and friends, commented on how well prepared the students were and how well they interacted with guests. The students taking part enjoyed the experience as it enabled them to develop their communication skills, meet new people and learn from one another.

The annual Harrow College Expo celebrates student life at the college. The Expo gives students from each department an opportunity to provide an insight into what they do on their course and what their aspirations are for the year ahead.
