Health and Social Care students at Harrow College have been networking against the clock with a host of professionals from the Health and Social Care sector.
The event (on 6th Feb 2018) was a quirky spin on the popular speed dating concept where groups of students have 10 minutes per professional to ask questions, learn more about their profession and get as much career advice as possible.
Health and Social Care professionals from across the sector were involved including representation from Barnet Hospital, Harrow Probation Service, Harrow Youth Stop, University of West London, Bucks New University, Compass, Care Assist Ltd, The University of Hertfordshire and the London Metropolitan University.
The profession types included Drugs Counsellors, Mammogram Practitioners, Senior Probation Officer, Resilience Mentor, Health Promotion Ambassador, Operating Department Assistant
Social Worker, Medication and Rehab Assistant, Behaviour & Rehab Assistant, Care Assist Ltd, Youth Studies Ambassador, Recruitment Manager and a Psychology student.
As the 10 minute buzzer rang, the professionals rotated from group to group, taking quick fire questions from the eager students. Questions included how best to gain experience, which additional qualifications can help, what salaries can be expected as well as what the highs and lows of the job are. With students scribbling down notes and exchanging contact details, careers and curriculum staff at the college were thrilled by the passion and enthusiasm shown by the students to take full advantage of the opportunity.
Student feedback after the event was very positive. One student described the day as “inspiring” whilst another said; “I have learned about professions that I didn’t know existed. This has helped me to have more of an idea of what I would like to do in the future”.
