Harrow College has joined a national reading initiative called ‘Reading Ahead’ with the aim of encouraging students to do more reading.
The scheme has been embedded into tutorial classes at the college meaning staff can play an active role in promoting the scheme and encourage their students to get involved.
Reading Ahead is a national programme run by The Reading Agency which challenges everyone over the age of 16 to choose six reads of anything they choose – newspapers, poems, plays, websites, books and more. Upon completion, the reader should then submit a review and rate each item with the added incentive of the chance to enter a prize draw when 6 items have been completed.
The programme takes place every year in public libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons across the UK and reached 38,000 people in 2016/17. The Learning Centre at Harrow College has been running a reading challenge for the past few years having previously won a silver award.
Chris Evans, Student Progression Advisor at Harrow College, has been spearheading the programme internally. He said:
“This is about changing perceptions of reading, opening up opportunities and building student confidence. The programme has just started and already we have seen excellent interest from our students”.
