Six Harrow College students were honoured with the Jack Petchey achievement awards for their outstanding work and efforts during the academic year. The scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables youth organisations like Harrow College to celebrate the achievements of their young people.
The awards were presented by the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Rekha Shah, at the Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth on Friday, 24 February 2017.
As well as their awards, each student winner also receives a grant of £250 which is to be used for the benefit of a group.
Congratulations to all the winners! Below are the details of their achievements:
Ja-Dae Johnson
Ja-Dae has been mentoring a first year student who was finding college a little daunting. This contact has made a real difference and has helped the student to settle in well. Ja-Dae has continued with a committed attitude, managing her own workload but still finding time to support fellow students.
Award spent on a colour screen printing machine for the department.
Laraib Haider:
Laraib has been a very vocal representative for her class and ensures she regularly meets with the head of school to address any issues. She is constantly churning out new ideas to support students and is active in ensuring they enjoy their time at college.
Award spent on a class trip to the cinema
Rui Xin Tao:
Rui has represented Harrow College in many maths competitions. She uses her free time to do things which are potentially inspirational to other students. She is a diligent student who works hard and is achieving excellent results.
Award spent on chemical equipment for the science club.
Stalone Santiago:
Stallone has been supporting students as a teaching volunteer in the Computing for Absolute Beginner and Intermediate courses. He helps the IT Lab and other activities and supports his classmates to submit tasks by the due date. He has also participated in the Open Day at the College as a student ambassador.
Award spend on 5 camera tablets for the department.
Amy Theed:
Amy is a student on the Next Step Learning Links program. She has shown skills in business enterprise, buying lunch from M & S for college staff using customer service and money skills. She is very supportive of students who have difficulty remembering the steps involved in this lunch service and is kind and encouraging.
Award spent on a trip to a Karaoke Club with her class
The Jack Petchey Foundation was launched in 1999 by Jack Petchey CBE, himself an East End entrepreneur. On their website, a quote from Jack Petchey regarding his awards programme reads "We do it because we want to help young people raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society".
