Science

Our intensive, full-time, one-year course is for 16-19+ students whose first language is not English and who are interested in studying or retaking their GCSE science subjects.

The syllabus covered for each of the sciences consists of a subject core and extension material.

The Biology GCSE covers topics including Genetics, Cells, Environmental Studies, Human Behaviour and Biotechnology. The Chemistry GCSE covers topics including Atomic Structure, Chemical Reactions, Chemical Synthesis and Modern Applications. The Physics GCSE covers topics including Space Exploration, Electricity, Mechanics, Radioactivity and Medical Physics.

Students will also study GCSE Maths and ESOL at Level 1 or Level 2 as part of the ESOL Package course. All full-time students will have a personal tutor and access to a wide range of enrichment activities. Your course will give you an opportunity to develop skills in numeracy, literacy and communication, including speaking and listening skills and good study techniques.

  • Entry requirements

    Students must have prior knowledge or qualifications in science, demonstrating their readiness for the course. Students are also required to undertake an in-house assessment to evaluate their aptitude in science, English, and maths.

  • Who is the course for?

    The comprehensive curriculum includes GCSE Maths and the three distinct sciences: GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, and GCSE Physics. It also includes ESOL at Level 1/Level 2 or GCSE Language. This course is ideal for students that want to enhance their scientific knowledge within a supportive ESOL environment.

  • How is the course assessed?

    The syllabus consists of a subject core, additional and extension material. GCSE assessment will be linear in structure, so that examinations are taken at the end of the course. The Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life (L1/L2) will also be taken at the end of the course.

    You should expect to provide yourself with all standard stationary, writing materials and folders. You will also need a scientific calculator. You may wish to purchase your own course books. These typically amount to approximately £10. A contribution is expected towards optional trips and visits. Enrolment form, Learning Agreement, Timetable and all standard stationary equipment. You must be prepared to start work in your first lesson.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    The GCSE Science programme allows students to progress onto Level 3 courses. It provides the basis for AS/A2 Biology, Chemistry and Physics or BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences.
