GCSEs/Functional Skills English & Maths

  • Entry requirements

    No formal requirements necessary however Grade E in GCSE Maths or Functional skills Maths at Entry 3 are useful.
    To successfully receive a course offer, you will need to pass the initial assessment. After passing the initial assessment, you will be offered a place in the introductory period of the course (the first 6 weeks starting in September) during which time you will be assessed again to secure a permanent place on the course.
    Questions in the initial assessment which will take place during enrolment will be from the following topics. All questions are at Foundation level (Grade 1/2/3).
    Topics to revise for the assessment include:
    • Number
    • Percentage
    • Divide/ multiply integer/decimals
    • Negative number; +, , X, /
    • Index numbers
    • Fractions; +,
    , X, / , Equivalent Fractions
    • Ratio
    • BIDMAS
    • Geometry
    • 3D shapes; properties
    • Top and side views(elevations)
    • Area perimeter
    • Probability and statistics
    • Simple calculation of probability
    • Average, range

  • Who is the course for?

    This course is for students who need to improve their maths skills in order to progress to Level 1 or 2 or GCSE and further study.

  • Study methods

    Students are taught as a group for 2 hours per week. They should also do a substantial amount of homework. Lessons are on Tuesday starting at 5 pm. The time and day for next year will be confirmed in the interview.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Exams can take place in Jan, March, May, June and July. You have opportunity to pass the exam in one of these sessions. Final dates will be confirmed during the course

    The course will take place on Tuesday from 1700 to 1900. *(Day and time may change)

    You will need a scientific calculator, a ruler, compasses, a protractor, pens and pencils.
    A4 folder and writing pad, pen, pencil, rubber, ruler and calculator.
