Early Years/Childcare

Completion of 14 units made of written course work and work placement assessments.

  • Entry requirements

    Students must be aged 19+, working, volunteering in an early years setting or with a keen interest in working with younger children. Applicants should have Level 1 or be working towards Level 1 in Maths and English. Applicants will be required to have an interview with a member of the Childcare team and will be assessed for suitability based on their existing qualifications and experience before being offered a place on the course. Students will also need to have an Enhanced DBS certificate (can be arranged through the college) as you will be required to take part in a work placement of 12hours a week for the duration of your course, in an early years setting.

  • Who is the course for?

    Adults working or volunteering in the early years sector who would like to study and achieve a formal qualification. This course is also suitable for adults who have a keen interest in working in the early years sector.

  • Study methods

    Class based discussions, presentations, group work, online resources, and independent study.

  • How is the course assessed?

    All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. Knowledge based outcomes can be assessed using non–mandatory assessment tasks provided for tutors’ convenience in this specification. Skills based outcomes must be achieved with reference to a real work environment and must include direct observation within the workplace.

  • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    A learner with this qualification will be counted towards the Level 2 ratio when working as a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner across the Early Years Workforce.

    Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

    • Nursery practitioner

    • Classroom assistant

    • Pre-school practitioner
  • Where Next – Further Studies

    Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other relevant Level 3 qualifications relating to early years and child care.
