Electrical Installation

All students will develop a general understanding of construction, including:

  • Health and safety
  • The science behind building design, surveying and planning
  • Making accurate and appropriate measurements
  • Construction methods
  • Building regulations and standards
  • Data management and information standards in construction
  • Relationship management and customer service
  • How the Internet of Things (IoT) impacts construction
  • Digital engineering techniques
  • Mathematical techniques to solve construction problems
  • Construction design principles and processes
  • The construction industry and its role in the economy
  • Sustainability and the environmental impact of construction
  • Business, commerce and corporate social responsibility

They will also learn about topics specific to building services engineering, including:

  • Building technology principles
  • Building services engineering systems
  • Maintenance principles
  • Tools, equipment and materials

In addition to the core content, each student must choose one of the following specialisms:

  • Electrical and electronic equipment engineering
  • Electrotechnical engineering
  • Gas engineering
  • Protection systems engineering
  • Plumbing and heating engineering
  • Heating engineering and ventilation
  • Refrigeration engineering and air conditioning engineering
  • Entry requirements

5 x GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade A- C) including English and Maths or a relevant Level 2 qualification at merit or above.

Students with 4 x GCSEs grade 9-4 (grade A- C) including English and maths should apply and will be interviewed.

  • Who is the course for?

This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16-19-years old who wish to work within the Building Services Engineering Industry.

  • Study methods

Through a mixture of lectures, discussions, group and pair work, practical demonstrations, role play and work experience. You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of independent study outside of timetabled classes. You will also undertake 9 WEEKS (45 days) minimum working with an employer on an industry placement

  • How is the course assessed?

Learners must complete: Two externally set exams covering knowledge from the building services engineering core (component 350).

The exams provide sufficient sampling of the content and consist of a mixture of short answer questions (SAQs), some of which will be structured, and extended response. The balance of questions in assessing across assessment objectives (AOs) 1, 2 and 3 will allow for the appropriate differentiation of learners to support the reliable setting of boundaries.

One employer-set project covering knowledge and skills from the building services engineering core (component 350). The employer-set project will consist of a well-defined, real industry-style brief. The brief will be complex and non-routine, and will require the use of relevant maths, English and digital skills. The brief will provide a valid context for the Level 3 learner to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the core content and their core skills to solve occupationally relevant situations and/or problems.

    Plus two occupational specialisms from (351 & 358) or (355 & 359) or (356 & 355) or one occupational specialism from (353) or (354) or (357) or (352).
